President's Welcome

Founded in 1823, Exeter College Boat Club is one of the oldest boat clubs in the world with a rich history of rowing excellence. The Club has held over a dozen Headships at Torpids and Summer Eights, and has seen victories in the Grand Challenge Cup and Ladies Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta. Our crews are now seeing their hard work herald a period of resurgence and, aided by our generous donors, we have been able to upgrade much of our equipment. ECBC is now looking to surge into Division I and revive active alumni participation in club activities, both competitive and social. Join us as we take on our competition in Oxford and beyond.

Fantastic outcome for Exeter M1 today, beating Corpus by 1/2 a length to win the 2017 Nephthys Regatta. Many thanks to OULRC for hosting a great day of racing.

This weekend was the 2017 Isis Sculls head race, hosted by City of Oxford Rowing Club here on the Isis stretch of the Thames. The club having entered a men’s quad, finished 12th (17th adjusted) out of 243 boats as well as winning their category. Many thanks to City of Oxford Rowing Club for hosting the event, and photo credits to our very own Leo Xiaohang Fang!

A huge thank you to our outgoing coach, Simon Mungall!

Simon Mungall, the men’s coach for ECBC since Michaelmas 2015 is moving on from Exeter College Boat Club for the next season. We thank Simon for all his hard work over the past two years, for the hours he’s put into coaching our athletes, rigging our boats and improving our club. Our men’s crews have felt success under his guidance and have risen up the bumps charts in Torpids and Summer Viiis. We wish him well in all his future endeavors.

Trinity Term 2016 saw the arrival of two new racing eights at Exeter, following a successful fundraising campaign last year. A combination of the inaugural ECBC/ExVac ergathon and two generous donations from emeritus fellow Prof Raymond Dwek and an anonymous donor allowed the club to add two brand new Filippi F42 eights to our fleet, one for each of W1 and M1.

A boat naming ceremony was held the weekend before summer eights, and saw the two eights being blessed by the chaplain, as well as singing from the choir and words from the Rector and boat club President. The ceremony, a week before Summer Eights, ended with a lap of the Isis from each of the boat club’s first crews in their new boats, and was well attended by alumni and current students alike.

The women’s eight was named Sandra D, a tribute to the wife of boat club patron and emeritus fellow Prof Raymond Dwek, and the men’s eight was named Andúril, the sword reforged to vanquish evil in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings.

IMGP1386

This year the Exeter women put out a mixed boat with Oriel men in the Gilpin’s Gin Oriel Regatta 2016, for the crewdate competition (4 men from one college combined with 4 women from another college).

The combined squad had a successful day progressing all the way to the semi finals, but were denied the final by the Mansfield women (W2) and OUL, in round 2 seeing off St Peters men and Hertford women (W2), and in the quarter finals, seeing off Wadham women and Brasenose men.

The crew were also due to race in the B final, however, Oriel men were almost too successful – also making the B final with the Pembroke women, and thus the race was cancelled due to the Oriel men not being able to fill both boats at the same time!

The full set of result are available here.

Today, members of Exeter College are taking part in a 220km sponsored “ergathon” – a row from Exeter to Exeter, to raise money for ECBC and the college charity, ExVac.

ExVac is a charity which takes disadvantaged children in the Oxfordshire area on a week’s holiday during the Easter Vac.  For more information, please visit http://exvac.co.uk/

After an hour we have completed about 30 km of this distance – only 190 to go!

Best of luck to everyone!

If you would like to support us, please donate at our President’s fundraising page here – all your donations will be split 50/50 between the two organisations.

**Update**

We are pleased to announce that with the combined efforts of ECBC, ExVac and volunteers we managed to complete the 220km distance in a time of 8 hours 45 minutes, raising a total of over £5000 to be split between ECBC and ExVac.

Thank you so much to everyone who took part and supported the event, and thank you all for your kind donations!
